It depicts the Ukonvasara, the ax hammer of the Finnish thunder god Ukko. Unlike the Western Scandinavians, the Finns in the Viking Age did not carry a Thor's hammer, but this similarly shaped amulet, also called Ukonkirves (axe of Ukko) like Thor's hammer, it was supposed to summon lightning and thunder.
